‘Partner wins prize for best NGO in the field of water and sanitation’
In Uganda, Simavi suffered a setback. The cooperation with one of Simavi’s partners came to an end because of a lack of transparency. The organisation refused entry to a team of accountants sent by Simavi to investigate allegations of mismanagement. This was reason enough for Simavi to break all ties.
The main result for Simavi in Uganda over the past year was the identification of programmes for the WASH alliance and deciding which ones will be carried out within the framework of the MFS grants. Simavi is the coordinator of this process within the WASH programme.
To this end, as in other countries where the alliance works, a large study was conducted in March 2010. Apart from this, no new projects or new partnerships were started in Uganda in 2010. Over the past year, Simavi primarily concentrated on existing partnerships.
Partnerships
Two examples of such partners are EMESCO and JESE. EMESCO is an organisation that addresses health improvement through better access to water and sanitation and by training health workers and traditional midwives.
In 2010, this local partner trained a total of almost 34,500 people. Almost 700 households gained better access to safe drinking water, a total of almost 5,000 people. In addition, 584 households were provided with a toilet, 1,143 households with water and 1,079 households with new mosquito nets.
Award
Another partner organisation, JESE (Joint Effort to Save the Environment), committed to improved water and sanitation with the help of Simavi, won the award ‘Best performing NGO in the water and sanitation sector in Uganda’ in 2010. Well-deserved recognition for the good work performed by the organisation.
